2010-10-02 Holes in the tin

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

In the second part of our oral history series from the central eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia, we hear stories of everyday life on Noongar country. In `Holes in the tin´, elders remember the times of their grandparents when survival was a matter of hard work and ingenuity, when home was a tin shack and bed was a government issue blanket.

Also we sit down with Uncle Jack Charles, who’s returned to the stage with Jack Charles v The Crown, a production based on a series of monologues he wrote about his life. He’s collaborated with his old mate John Romeril and Rachael Maza-Long, the artistic director of the Melbourne-based Indigenous theatre company Ilbijerri.

Also – Ursula Yovich talks about her solo cabaret show Magpie Blues and her role in the cast of the Aboriginal opera Pecan Summer which has its world premiere this Saturday.

2010-10-16 Mari nawi: Aboriginal odysseys

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

The Eora of the Sydney basin were adventurous mariners who travelled far beyond their own country. Tired and homesick Bennelong and his young Wangal kinsman Yemmerrawanne performed a traditional chant in London in 1793 and the song was noted by a Welsh composer and harpist. Recently the song was performed for the first time in more than 200 years to coincide with an exhibition at the State Library of New South Wales.

Also – we meet some of the delegates from a conference on Indigenous womens´ wellbeing, held last month in Darwin. And Leah Purcell talks about her role as both director and star of a new production of the award-winning play The Story of the Miracles at Cookie´s Table.

2010-10-23 Tammy Anderson/Head Full of Love

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Tammy Anderson is a self-described rubber-faced clown. 10 years on, the actor and comedian is still touring her autobiographical one-woman show I Don´t Wanna Play House, about the first 15 years of her life. And a two-hander, Head of Full Of Love tells the story of an unlikely relationship that develops and flourishes at the Alice Springs Beanie Festival.
