2010-09-04 Boxing for Palm Island/Maitland Schnaars

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Boxing for Palm Island is a film with a lot of hope, like the island itself – despite its history as a place of exile and punishment. But if there´s one thing that continues to haunt the residents of the island, it´s the spectre of negative media attention. Few stories seem to filter out that focus on the good and the positive. Enter, the filmmaker Adrian Wills who followed a troupe of young boxers through their everyday lives to the national championships. And we meet the emerging playwright Maitland Schnaars, who´s collaborated with a performing arts collective from Spain to produce his first play about masculinity and fatherhood, If I Drown I Can Swim.

2010-09-11 David Unaipon Award/Stiff Gins

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Jeanine Leane grew up in a house full of strong Aboriginal women literally on the road to Gundagai. Her first novel is a kind of fictionalised memoir told through the eyes of a child. This week, Jeanine reads from her manuscript Purple Threads which has just won the prestigious David Unaipon Award, named in honour of the Ngarrindjeri preacher and inventor who was also one of the first published Aboriginal writers. And we sit down with the Stiff Gins, the vocal harmony group who´ve just finished recording their long-awaited new album Wind and Water.

Also, we´ll be joined by Christine Anu who´s about to independently release her first single in seven years.
