2010-08-07 Koorie Heritage Trust

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

The Koorie Heritage Trust has been protecting Aboriginal culture in Victoria for 25 years. It´s not a museum but a vibrant keeping place for a living culture. We meet the Trust´s chief executive officer Jason Eades who´s won a prestigious award for his stewardship of the trust. Also, a comprehensive book filled with bio-cultural knowledge of plants and animals in the Wadeye (Port Keats) and Daly River region was launched earlier this year, helping to keep culture alive.
maybe this will change things

2010-08-14 No ordinary piece of bush: the high price of Coronation Hill

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

It’s hard to imagine now, but there was a time when Indigenous affairs were a key political battleground and the fight over mining at Coronation Hill was a flashpoint. The dispute was fought by Aboriginal people and mining interests, politicians and environmentalists, lawyers and anthropologists. Coronation Hill is sacred to the Jawoyn people; they believe it’s the resting place of the creator being Bula. The fate of a prime minister hung in the balance, and despite some opposition from within his own Cabinet, Bob Hawke prevailed. But less than six months after his decision to ban mining on Aboriginal religious grounds, Paul Keating became Prime Minister.

Please note that due to live coverage of the 2010 federal election, Awaye! will not be heard on Saturday, 21st of August at 6pm. This program will instead be heard during our repeat broadcast on Monday, 23rd of August at 3pm.

As well as attending language workshops and dance rehearsals, we´ll be serenaded by the Springwater Band, and travel down the track to get bush tucker.
